Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed he does not need to change philosophy nor change the way the club is run and describes the Gunners season as “disappointed love”.
After what looked to be a promising season for Arsenal it turned out to be their sixth year without any silverware to show for it with many fans calling for a change in philosophy and requesting that Wenger acquires some experience rather than young talent that can be brought through the ranks.
Wenger also suggested that there has been more criticism this year due to impatience.
“The criticism has been sharper this year because of the impatience of people, people are used to us being in the Champions League so we have to give them more, but we’re not capable of doing that.”
Criticism has perhaps been harsh in some areas but this is Arsenal we are talking about, a team capable of reaching the Champions League each year would be a great achievement for most, but for fans of the Emirates side it simply is not enough.
Wenger continued.
“People love what we do, but they want us to be rewarded so that they can be convinced we do things the right way. They want proof that we do things the right way. For our fans the frustration was that we were so close to convincing everybody of how football can be great, but in the end not being able to deliver.”
“I would call it disappointed love. It was cruel and sometimes you get excessive responses to that. I share that and understand it. But that doesn’t mean we have to change our philosophy or the way the club is run.”
“We get it 95 per cent right, but we must gain that five per cent because it’s so frustrating to flirt with success like we have done.”
Whether that extra 5% will come through purchasing experience this summer remains to be seen, with the futures of Fabregas and Nasri not yet certain, Wenger will need to keep the two of them to be able to add more depth to the squad and keep the quality intact.
With speculation increasing regarding bids for Christopher Samba and Scott Parker, should either be making an entrance to the Emirates then surely that will be a start.
