West Ham are looking to add much needed experience at the back next season should they survive the Premiership tussle at the bottom of the table, and it looks to be the services of Germany international and Werder Bremen centre back Per Mertesacker on Avram Grant’s wish list.
The 26 year old has not enjoyed his best season with Werder Bremen this year and German giant could be looking to move on in the summer after spending five years with the Bundesliga outfit.
The matter was first brought to our attention when our source in Hannover had suggested mumblings surrounding the clubs current situation, where relegation for a club that were in this seasons Champions League could be imminent.
For West Ham, who are in a relegation battle of their own, Mertesacker would represent a step in the right direction should they survive and with the Hammers now in a position to almost score at will, their defence is the next area that Grant will be looking to sure up.
Mertsesacker has had numerous clubs interested in him, most notably that of Arsenal who seem to be interested in most centre-backs these days but should survival become a reality for the club, then the signing of Mertesacker would put out a bold statement to the rest of the Premiership for next season.
