With the summer transfer window edging closer and United’s title challenge seeming more complete, the question of how United will strengthen their already strong squad is again a question on many Manchester United’s fans’ lips.
With Van der Sar retiring at the end season, United will definitely be in search for a new goalkeeper. A goalkeeper is pivotal in any team but with the attacking talents of United, the need for an impressive stopper seems vital. David de Gea is a possible link, with the 20 year old already a regular on the Atletico Madrid team sheet. He is regarded as a future star and could be another Schmeichel if he is treated right at Old Trafford.
A weakness in United’s team is rare, but recently their lack of a central playmaker has never been more important. With no Gerrard, Lampard or Van Der Vart in their team, the one thing that United seem to be missing from becoming a great team is a playmaker. An option for United is Mesut Özil. Although he has only recently joined Real Madrid last summer, reports have shown that with Mouriniho seemingly on his way out of Madrid, they may be available to squeeze in a successful bid for the German. Another option for Fergurson is Charlie Adam who’s impressive form this season has made him a top target for many clubs.
Another option could be Gary Cahill. The Bolton player is regarded as one of the most under rated players in the Premiership. His qualities include strength and no nonsense defending similar to the likes of Ferdinand and Vidic. Cahill seems on the way out of Bolton with bids from Liverpool and other top clubs expected for him in the summer. Cahill could partner Smalling in a new look United team when the ageing Ferdinand and Vidic hang up their boots in Manchester.
Finally, the need for another superstar is evident at Old Trafford. At the moment, Rooney is the only superstar currently at United. In my opinion, the need for another player with the quality of Ronaldo or Rooney is increasing around Manchester. Although every superstar is loved by his club, the departure of Torres from Anfield shows that, if offered enough money, any player will move. Sergio Aguero could be one of these superstars who, as a known goal scorer in Spain, could lift the weight of Rooney’s soldiers.
Although Manchester United are always strong, no team is ever perfect. With the retirement of Van De Sar imminent they will need a new stopper to be able to compete in Europe. However, the need for a new playmaker is also crucial for United to aid Rooney in finding his former self.
