Why we Arsenal fans should be optimistic

After watching Arsenal against Udinese yesterday evening I did get the felling (especially at the final whistle) that this side really can achieve something this season.

There is a committment there, a hunger and belief. Gervinho was awesome going forward, frightening really after just a few games for Arsenal although I do wonder why our left wingers tend not to be bothered about running back all the time to help out the defence, this is something that has been noticed with Arshavin for some time, I hope it does not rub off on Gervinho.

Reports in the newspapers at the beginning of the summer said we needed a new goalkeeper, I think not, at least not now, ok so we could have brought in Maarten Stekelenburg, what a great back up to Szczęsny he would be! We really do have a top, top goalkeeper there and should Wenger invest in another centre-back, be it Jags or Vertonghen we will have that triangle at the back that would not only look solid on paper but also on the pitch.

Jenkinson was also very impressive, there were some nerves at the beginning for the youngster but he showed, particularly in defence, that he has the makings of a very good Arsenal player.

Now that we are in the Champions League proper, Wenger has said that he expects some new arrivals. Depending on who these might be it would be a fantastic boost to the squad to have some top quality additions. I read somewhere this morning about Kaka but I cannot see that happening. However, Eden Hazard, Yann M’Vila, Phil Jagielka and Mauro Zarate would be fantastic – four fresh players.

Hazard is still only 20 and my only main concern would be him heading off after a few seasons. M’Vila might not really be needed but I’d rather have him on our side fighting for a position. If we lose one defensive midfielder to injury, and one get’s suspended (that will happen – guaranteed) then we will want cover. Jagielka would be awesome lined up alongside TV but a lot depends on the transfer fee, plus the player will only leave Everton if the club say he’s for sale.

Zarate has not got the best scoring record but he can finish and with the likes of our lads offering him chances on a plate, much like RVP, he will put them away.

Although yesterday morning it was all about panic and why are we not buying anyone, this morning I feel we can manage top four without a hitch, like Wenger said, we drew at Newcastle with ten men, we lost to Liverpool with ten men, with eleven on the field for the full 90 we will do well.

I am certainly a lot more optimistic than I was a week ago.
