Wigan manager Martinez takes positives from defeat

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez remained upbeat after his side slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham yesterday, saying that he was proud of the spirit his team showed.

Tottenham had led through goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Gareth Bale but Wigan grabbed a goal back through Mohamed Diame and continued to fight for the point despite going down to ten men after Steve Gohouri was shown a second yellow card.

Although Wigan failed to steal a point, Martinez preferred to look at the positive aspects of the performance.

“Second half I think my players deserve huge credit,” said the Latics boss.

“I’m sure from the outside it is a defeat and nothing more, but for us it is a lot more.”

He continued:

“It has been a really good reaction and something which can give us a real boost after the second-half performance.”

However, reflecting on the goals his team conceded, Martinez admitted that they were avoidable:

“It doesn’t matter how well Spurs played in the first half, the frustration was that the two goals were soft – but I couldn’t be prouder of the second-half performance with 10 men.”
