Will Liverpool’s big spending continue this summer?

Liverpool seem to be a team heading in the right direction where money and transfers are concernedLiverpool were certainly ‘big spenders’ during the recent January transfer window, with the club netting both Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll for a grand total of over £59 million. The new owners have certainly not been shy in displaying their loyalty to club, and big money signings such as these, may give an indication as to their strategy for future success. The summer transfer window will be an ideal time for new signings and it will be interesting to see if the club can maintain such a high threshold of spending. Kenny Dalglish could certainly use the summer as an opportunity to put his stamp on the team, and bring in some new faces in the process.

Despite the season only entering March, rumours have already surfaced over who the potential targets are for Liverpool this summer. Liverpool have already been linked with five potential signings: Sylvain Marveaux, Bojan Krkić, José Enrique, Christian Eriksen and Oscar Wendt.

Liverpool have looked to strengthen their midfield, with the signings of Joe Cole and Raul Meireles in 2010. The departure of Ryan Babel and rumours of Milan Jovanovic leaving in the summer opens the door to fresh young talent, possibly found in Sylvain Marveaux and Christian Eriksen. Marveaux, the twenty-four year old attacking-left midfielder valued at £7 million could be the replacement Dalglish is looking for, and the French U21 capped midfielder has certainly impressed this season in Ligue 1, scoring one goal and providing three assists in ten appearances for Rennes. Eriksen has been similarly impressive this season with Ajax, despite being only nineteen. The Danish international and attacking all-rounder has scored two goals and provided six assists in nineteen Eredivisie appearances.

Liverpool may also be looking to add depth to their attacking options with the possible signing of Bojan from F.C Barcelona. The twenty year old Spanish international is regarded as a promising new talent, valued at £13 million. Having played in twenty matches so far in La Liga and scoring three, this player is a promising star for the future.

The arrival of José Enrique and Oscar Wendt could also see Dalglish add depth to the defence. Enrique has been a consistent player for Newcastle in gaining twenty appearances in the Premier League, and could fill the gap left by left-back Paul Konchesky. FC Kopenhagen’s Wendt could also fulfil a similar role to Enrique if signed. Wendt (also linked with Tottenham) is a thirteen time capped Swedish international valued at £2.5 million, and has also gained Champions League experience this season.

Despite the season entering early March, there are now already rumours of potential signings. It is perhaps too early to tell who will come to Anfield and there are as yet no real ‘big money’ rumours circulating. However, over the years it has become clear that anything could happen, and it would not be surprising to see Liverpool attempt to lure some high value talent in preparation for next season.
