Both sides will feel as though they can win this encounter, so whoever comes out on top here is sure to be full of confidence.
The Reds were impressive in group stages and Brendan Rodgers deserves credit for using his squad to its full potential in games. He got the balance right between playing his big guns and giving the youngsters a chance to show what they can do.
Zenit, however, will be disappointed to be playing in the Europa League as they fell at the first hurdle in the Champions League. The Russians felt as though they could go a long way in Europe’s elite club compeition, but that wasn’t the case and now they must be in the right frame of mind to take on Liverpool.
Rodgers is without Daniel Sturridge in this one as he is cup-tied as he has played in Europe for Chelsea this campaign. The Striker was injured for the 2-0 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion on Monday night and in truth, the Merseysiders really missed him.
Sturridge’s absence piles the pressure on Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez to come up with the goods once more and Rodgers might not have any choice but to play his two star men here. Suarez is the 11/2 favourite to score first.
It is going to be a tough evening for Liverpool and they have to cope with a hostile atmosphere and testing conditions. They do look like decent value for the win though as they are at 5/2.
As for Zenit, for the money they spent during the summer transfer window, they won’t be overly happy with the season so far as they are in third position in the Russian Premier League and are now competing in the Europa League.
They added the highly-rated duo of Hulk and Alex Witsel to their squad and it is big games like this one where they have to show why so much money was spent on them. Hulk can be backed at 11/5 to score at anytime here.
Zenit have never lost in to an English side in Europe on home soil, so should be confident of winning this one and taking a decent lead to Anfield for the second leg with them.
The home side will be expecting a victory here and if they can get the service right to their forwards, then they should be coming out on top as they do have a lot of quality going forward.
Also, Liverpool’s only defeat away from home in the Europa League this campaign was in Russia, against Anzhi Makhachkala, so they don’t seem to like these conditions and their young side could be somewhat intimidated by the hostile atmosphere.
With both sides looking as though they are capable of winning this one, it should be a fascinating 90 minutes of action.
