Newcastle remain keen on Dutch defender

Sources are suggesting that Newcastle United are once again becoming interested in PSV left-back Erik Pieters and could mount a summer bid for the player.

The Magpies were being linked with a move for the left back six months ago and a deal was supposedly close to being completed, however family issues meant the deal didn’t go through.

However, that looks to have been resolved now and the Dutchman may finally complete a switch to the Sports Direct Arena in five months time.

Newcastle signed Davide Santon last summer as a replacement for the departed Jose Enrique, who completed a £6m transfer to Liverpool.

That being said, the Italian is young and more experienced cover is understandably being sought by the North East outfit, who have started to utilise Ryan Taylor as a right-sided midfielder more and more often as of late.

Pieters has made over 100 appearances for PSV since making his debut as a 20 year-old in 2008.

The 23 year-old has also featured for the Netherlands national team on 14 occasions and is on course to travel with Holland to Euro 2012.

Pieters is contracted at PSV until 2014 but could welcome a move to the new heights of the English top flight.

Should Newcastle choose to make their move for Pieters this summer, the full back would be expected to cost somewhere around £6m and would become a part of an ever-improving Newcastle squad that are now shooting for European football.
