Newcastle United enter the race for long term Arsenal target

Vertonghen is a rumoured target of Arsenal and Newcastle UnitedNewcastle United have entered the market for rumoured long term Arsenal target Jan Vertonghen.

The left footer is highly rated and is considered to be one of the most sought after defenders in the world at this time but Newcastle United, on current form, and slipping away from a top six position, could be considered to be audacious in their attempts to land the Belgian international.

Fans of Arsenal in particular have always seen the 24 year old as a natural choice to join Vermaelen at the heart of the North Londoners defence but with Mertesacker starting to blend in well with some strong performances, Vertonghen could be seen as someone to fill in as a defensive midfielder or even at left-back.

The start of the season saw Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United climb the rankings fast with the Tyneside club perhaps linked with players they would not normally have been linked with. Whether Vertonghen falls into this category is a question that only the future can answer however reports across the internet claim their is interest from Pardew in the defender.

Whilst Vertoghen would add obvious quality to Arsenal’s steadying defence it appears the Gunners will not look to make a move for the Ajax defender until the summer and although Newcastle United could be ready with an offer, it seems unlikely that the 24 year old would choose the North of England ahead of the North of London.
