Wilshere sees setback in injury return

Arsenal have been dealt a further blow in what is a growing list of absences after learning that Jack Wilshere has suffered another setback in his recovery and will be missing for another two months.

The 20 year-old was expecting to return to full training and first team action in February but the news now means that the earliest the side can expect to see Wilshere again is in April.

Wilshere underwent surgery on his ankle in September in an attempt to repair a stress fracture picked up against New York Red Bulls in a pre-season friendly.

The starlet was reportedly progressing better than expected in his recovery but after breaking down in training earlier this week, scans have revealed that a lengthier time will be required on the sidelines.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Aston Villa, Arsene Wenger stated: “He had a little setback which is under investigation at the moment. We don’t know how bad it is. As soon as we know more, we will sit down with Jack and will inform you. He has pain again in his ankle. He has done nothing special, but he has pain and so we stopped him straight away. He had started running again and that’s how he did it.”

The Frenchman added:”I don’t want to come out with gut feelings on it because he is seeing a specialist today – I do not want to give any wrong information. As soon as we know more, we will let you know.”

Bacary Sagna, Andre Santos and Carl Jenkinson have also been on the injury list and present a selection dilemma for Wenger who is striving to attain a Champions League spot but seemingly reluctant to spend in the winter transfer window.
